The Story of Coralberry

The original inspiration for Coralberry Cottage came about because of the slipcovered furniture I purchased in 1995 from The Ragged Sailor on Block Island. What a novel idea especially on an island where everything required a ferry ride. So, in  2010 I found myself divorced and decorating a newly purchased home in Charleston SC. I was surprised to find limited choices for sofas and chairs. Liz, my architect and friend, suggested why not open a furniture store with our choices? So off we went to the furniture heart of the US; Highpoint NC. We found our inspiration from a family owned business that featured slipcovered sofas and swivel gliders. All the furniture was built on site. All the frames were warrantied for life. They let us offer custom welting and pillows with every sofa.

We had a very loyal customer base but when the Pandemic hit, I headed for Block Island. I was determined to find a place on the island to showcase our unique collection of home furnishings. With the help of my dear friend Jon Poston, I looked at the  Old Methodist Church and fell in love.  As I walked in the door, I thought ,"What a great project during the pandemic!" Even my granddaughter and Jon's wife pitched in. I was fortunate that the second floor was a B &B so we converted that to affordable housing. We created a conference room and a a space for the Block Island Conservancy to hold their meeting and store goodies.  Now, local home owners and even visitors have an on-island location for furnishing their homes, among others treasures.
